TREE SUPPORT SYSTEMS

failed union.webp

As trees grow, sometimes defects will present themselves in branch unions. This is normally caused when a branch union is too tight and the bark is included. The included union becomes weaker over time as the branch puts on mass and is at higher risk of failure. The other end of the spectrum can also be an issue, where a large lateral branch can be putting excessive force on an open union. Either situation can be problematic when in an urban environment with close proximity to buildings and high traffic areas.

When we have compromised or weak unions we can implement a tree support system. There are 2 main types, static and dynamic systems. A static system is an invasive technique used on a union that has started to open up or fail. Aircraft cable and hardware are used to secure the failing section to healthy parts of the tree so the failing section cannot move. A dynamic system is a non-invasive system used to support a weak, but not yet failing union. Hollow braid material that can be hand spliced in the tree, along with other materials that reduce impact on the bark are used to form a system that allows the tree to move naturally, but will restrict overextension.

Regular tree inspections are important to identify structural issues. If you notice something strange with a tree on your property, it's best to contact us immediately.

"EcoTree took the greatest care of an old tree of mine. I loved the whole experience , from the first meeting and quote and then the tree prune day itself. They were friendly, professional and answered all my questions and explained their work thoroughly. The tree looks incredible - full of life and ready for the summertime. They left my yard so tidy. Cannot recommend EcoTree enough. 5 stars, 2 thumbs up. Absolute best value and work done in my yard since I took over the care of the trees. THANK YOU!"
